Trial lessons enable us to introduce members of the public to the sport of gliding and to our club.

During your trial lesson you will fly over the beautiful Moray countryside with a qualified instructor in a two-seat glider from our airfield at Birnie, 3 miles south of Elgin. The trial lesson will normally consist of a comprehensive pre-flight safety briefing, an aerotow to a minimum of 2,000 feet and a flight of 15 to 30 minutes' duration. The instructor will demonstrate how the controls work and there will be the opportunity to do some of the flying or just relax and enjoy the bird's eye view of the local scenery.

Trial lessons can be booked from the beginning of April to the end of October however under special circumstances, we can accept vouchers any time during the year (Weekends Only).  If there is a specific date you would like to fly on which is outwith the trial lesson season, please contact us. Bookings can be made online or by telephone using a pre-paid voucher.

If you would like to know the dates and times we have available for booking before purchasing a voucher please use the - Trial Lesson Availability Viewer - Please note that this is provided as a guide only, as available slots may be booked at any time by voucher holders.

Book a Trial Lesson

Update - 14th October 2021 -  All our slots for booking in 2021 have been taken up and trial lessons will be restarted in April next year. If you have booked a lesson please note that despite relaxation of most government restrictions visitors to the airfield must still comply with our COVID safety measurers. You will need to bring a face mask which must be worn during the glider flight and at any time indoors. The clubhouse should only be accessed for use of the toilets or if you are required to do so by your instructor. If you have made a booking and subsequently develop COVID symptoms or test positive or have been advised to self isolate by the Track and Trace system, please cancel your booking and rebook after you've had a negative test. No voucher will expire until at least 2 years after the end of the crisis.  If you are actively seeking to join the club and train to fly gliders or have any queries please Contact Us

FAQ - The most frequently asked questions from people who are new to gliding.

After a Trial Lesson

We recognise that many of you only want to try gliding once in the same way that many people only do one parachute or bungee jump.

For those of you who only ever intended having a once in a lifetime glider flight we hope that it was all you expected it to be.

For those of you who've been bitten by the gliding bug we have to advise you that as of September 2021 we can no longer take on new members who require training as we already have more student glider pilots than we can cope with. For anyone who has had a trial lesson and was intending to join the club we are temporarily offering one year Associate Membership of the club for free (normally £32). Associate membership will put you in the queue to become a full member and start training when we have availability and it allows you to have a maximum of 12 flights paid for at normal rates in that year subject to availability.

If it has been agreed you can join the club and start training please read through Join the Club for more information. Anyone who is coming from another club who is post solo can join immediately provided they are are reasonably current in their flying.
